In 1985, Hombo Shuzo built the Mars Komagatke Distillery in Miyada Village, Nagano Prefecture, in search of the perfect environment for whisky production. The malt whisky distilled there, based on the ideas of Kiichiro Iwai, who designed the pot stills used at the distillery, has been maturing under the watchful eye of the magnificent nature at the foot of Mount Komagatake in the Central Alps.
The “Single Malt Komagatake 1986 AGED 30 YEARS Sherry Cask Natural Cask Strength” is a rare 30-year-old single malt whisky made by vatting together two casks of malt whisky distilled in 1986 and aged in a sherry cask. This single malt whisky, which has accompanied the history of the Mars Komagatake Distillery, is fragrant and elegant, with a rich, sweet aroma reminiscent of ripe plums, and a mellow flavor that gives a sense of its 30-year history.
The picture on the label, “You who cried lying face down, the faint scent of summer fruit, Mikoto,” is the work of Japanese-style painter Yasunari Ikenaga.
